Our first (and hopefully only) run-in with leeches…

Day 29

And no, I’m not talking about family, I’m talking about honest-to-goodness slimy, blood-sucking, water-dwelling leeches. Luckily, these were tiny ones, not Stand By Me size, but still. Eeeeewwwww.

Despite the fact that they were attached to their legs and feet in disgusting amounts, Hatchlings 1 & 2 were nonplussed by the whole ordeal, which I credit The Husband’s cousin with, as well as the fact that I was checking on a sleeping H#3 in the car, as I would have most certainly lost it. By the time I came back, all leeches were removed, all extremities were safely on dry land and conversation had moved on to plans for the next day as if nothing exciting had just happened.

In the meantime, they discovered a painted turtle with a nearly severed leg (who seemed to be adjusting to life as a three-legged turtle just fine thankyouverymuch), some cool rocks, several snail shells, some mating dragonflies in the shape of a heart and three baby fawns. And that’s not counting our lovely pizza dinner, our delightful post-dinner trip to the lakeside playground or the lovely backyard respite of a dear family friend, which we languished in until the mosquitoes and clock sent us home.

H#2 said today, with extreme satisfaction, that everyday something new happens here.

And that’s not even counting the puppy that was dropped off for us to consider taking home with us.

More on that later.
